Anxiety

Anxiety is defined as the reaction that creates sensations and thoughts associated with preparation for either flight or fight when a potential threat presents.

Anxiety is the body's natural reaction to threat, without anxiety, the body would not be prepared to fight or flee when confronted with danger.

When anxiety levels become artificially raised during times of stress or worry, for example, after bereavement, during relationship problems or money worries, the body and mind can develop what is called an 'anxiety disorder'.

Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety disorder is the condition caused when stress or constant anxiety provoking situations cause the mind to become reset at a higher than normal benchmark anxiety level. Anxiety disorder is most noticeable by the vast range of unpleasant sensations and thoughts it creates.

Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety attacks or panic attacks are the extreme manifestation of an anxiety reaction. They occur when adrenalin, which helps us to prepare for action when confronted by threat, is not used up by such a reaction. Because the anxiety experienced is false and no real threat exists, the body does not need to run away from or fight the threat - the adrenalin released by the adrenal glands courses around the sufferer's veins, waiting to be used up.

The heart beats faster, our mouths go dry and various bodily systems slow down in order to allow the body to use all available energy during the flight or fight response. When no such response is required an anxiety attack ensues, which brings with it sensations and thoughts that can be frightening and confusing.

Anxiety Conditions

Anxiety conditions range from shyness to extreme panic disorder, phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder. The symptoms of each of these conditions vary from person to person.

There are four primary anxiety conditions. These are:

Anxiety Symptoms

Donna Meyers talks about her experiences of anxiety.

Anxiety symptoms can present themselves anywhere in the body. Many are caused by muscle tension and confused nervous impulses created by an anxious mind. Some are connected to circulation, some to digestion and some to balance, hearing and sight but what is positive is that all anxiety symptoms are harmless.

As the body prepares for flight or fight, adrenalin is released by the adrenal glands. Adrenalin is the hormone responsible for preparing the body when we detect a threat. When adrenalin is used up affectively when real threat is present and our speed and strength is required for survival, it presents with few on going physiological symptoms. However, when no real threat is present, the available adrenalin is not used up effectively and this causes the bodily symptoms, thoughts and sensations we experience during an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety in Children

Child anxiety is becoming more common and often manifests itself as what some call 'school phobia'. Separation anxiety is usually the catalyst for child anxiety but family circumstances, bullying, exposure to another person with anxiety and genetic predisposition play a large role in its development.

It is often difficult to identify the catalyst for child anxiety and it is important to never draw attention to or list the possible culprits to a child as this can feed their anxious behaviour.

Anxiety Tips

There are a number of things that can be addressed quickly and easily which affect anxiety levels. These are breathing, posture and diversion.

Breathing

Whilst breathing is affected by anxiety levels and will return to normal after you have eliminated your anxiety, there are things you can do immediately which can relax breathing and minimize the effects of incorrect breathing such as hyperventilation, dizziness and panic attacks.

Posture

Correcting posture can have a profound effect on anxiety levels. Correct posture redresses any difficulties caused by compressing the internal organs and thoracic cavity associated with correct breathing, effective circulation and digestion.

Anxious people tend to sit in very tight, protective positions and this can have dramatic knock on effects in a number of bodily systems, not to mention the muscle pain and spasms which can be caused by sitting or standing in this way.

Diversion

What is diversion? Very simply, diversion is a useful technique which involves distracting the part of the brain responsible for creating anxiety by doing other things. This isn't always simple to do and many people struggle to find something which creates enough of a distraction against their, sometimes overwhelming, anxiety symptoms. When the correct diversion tactic 'for you' is found, the affect can be a massive relief.

Anxiety Help / Support

Anxiety help and support in the community or through conventional medical practitioners and services is spasmodic to say the least. Conventional routes for anxiety help and support are provided through doctors and local psychiatric teams primarily and these are often inappropriate, untargeted, unsupportive or oversubscribed; private assistance is often expensive and time consuming.

It is vital that sufferers understand that in order to provide affective anxiety help and support, a seamless, structured and targeted program of recovery is vital and that this should be accessible and cost effective.

Anxiety Treatment / Cures

Because anxiety is stored and perpetuated in the Amygdala and this organ is only accessible through controlling input to it, it is this that must be addressed in order to permanently eliminate anxiety and all of its symptoms.
