Fear - when isn't it appropriate?
Do you feel constantly full of fear, scared, anxious or panicky? Do you feel you have a phobia or may be developing one? Fear can be very productive, but inappropriate fear can be destructive and very restrictive.
Fear is an alarm signal for the body. The presence of the sensations of fear tells us that we need to be aware that we could be in danger. Fear isn't a pleasant sensation but it is absolutely necessary to our survival.
When fear is appropriate we accept it as perfectly normal. We all know how it feels to have our stomachs churn, our legs shake or our breathing to become faster and more labored. When this reaction happens inappropriately, when we feel the sensations of fear when no danger is present, we must then accept that we may have developed an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders create the sensation of fear because the body and mind think that it is an appropriate reaction to the situation we are in BUT, this reaction can be sensitized, exaggerated and amplified by stress or emotional upheaval for example, causing an anxious reaction and fear at times when it simply isn't needed.
Many people with inappropriate fear responses know all too well how it feels to panic or experience high, inappropriate anxiety or phobias... it is unpleasant, sometimes creates painful and unpleasant symptoms and can be embarrassing and frightening.
Fear doesn't have to be present though... there are definite steps you can take now to stop fear from having credibility... permanently no matter how long you have suffered, what age you are, or how intense your anxiety and fear is.
