What is depression?
"I took various anti-depressants for over twenty years and had cycling bouts of depression and panic attacks, I never left the house and my husband had left me. I realized soon after buying Charles' method program that I had spent too long nurturing my illness. Now, just 4 months later, I have a job and life is looking great again."
Laura Baker, CA
Depression is a clinical condition caused by changes in the chemicals in your body that regulate 'mood'.
Under certain circumstances, such as after bereavement or at times of high stress, these brain chemicals can become imbalanced which gives rise to thoughts and sensations which would not normally be experienced.
There are a number of different types of depressive conditions but all are caused by a chemical imbalance. Clinical depression causes a wide range of disturbing thoughts and symptoms and is generally treated using medication, psychology, psychiatry and some more invasive procedures.
Often, doctors will diagnose depression when anxiety disorder symptoms are present and may also prescribe anti-depressant drugs to combat the symptoms experienced. Misdiagnosis of anxiety or depressive conditions is common and confusing.
How do I tell if I am depressed or if I have an anxiety disorder?
There is a good general rule of thumb: Which came first, feelings of anxiety or depression?
You see, anxiety can cause the sufferer to feel depleted, fed up, sick of how they feel, even depressed but these symptoms are normal when you suffer from anxiety... this does not mean you have true, clinical depression.
If you were diagnosed with depression first and you did not have any symptoms of anxiety, then, chances are that you have a depressive condition.
