I just wanted to write a little about the disturbing thoughts that my anxiety disorder clients tell me about regularly and which I too suffered from during my own anxiety disorder.
These thoughts can cause sufferers to become scared of what is happening to them. They fear that they might have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or a psychotic illness for example. It can cause them to seek psychiatric support or to retreat and isolate themselves, confused and scared that they might act on them.
NONE OF THAT IS TRUE!
Many of my clients (as much as 75%) experience these thoughts which their doctors often misunderstand and misdiagnose. Some patients are given medication to get rid of these thoughts... medication which rarely helps (if ever!)
Many, many of my clients have thoughts about:
- Harming themselves
- Jumping from high places
- Harming people they love
- Sexual matters (some quite disturbing)
- About not loving or caring about the people that you should care about
- Picking up knives and harming someone (usually when they see a knife in the kitchen for example)
- Cutting themselves or someone else on glass, in a window for example
- Playing music, saying words or counting in their minds (or other obsessive type silent thoughts)
- other disturbing, violent or sexual actions
These are nothing more than another symptom of anxiety disorder.
Anxiety, by nature, produces 'what if' thoughts; thoughts fueled by your vivid, anxious imagination; thoughts which cause you to see yourself performing horrible things, things that you know that you could never do, but which disturb you deeply. ALL the product of anxiety!
With EVERY client I have ever helped who has experienced these thoughts, the thoughts disappear as the anxiety retreats... IN EVERY SINGLE CASE!
I KNOW how disturbing they are, I KNOW that you would never do the things you think about and I KNOW that these thoughts will go away.
Many people don't get these thoughts so IF YOU DON'T HAVE THEM ALREADY, you probably won't ever have them!
