Test Anxiety
Anxiety during tests or exams is common, we have all experienced it at one time or another, but for some people the level of anxiety experienced can be very unpleasant indeed and can, in some cases, lead to the person leaving the exam room, leaving the course early, panicking or failing the test.
Many people find the prospect of attempting tests a very daunting and anxiety provoking time whereas some people experience absolutely no test anxiety at all.
So what can be done about test anxiety?
Any inappropriate anxiety experienced is called an anxiety disorder. I dislike the term disorder as it suggests some kind of illness; anxiety isn't a mental or physical illness, it is a 'shift' in the way the body responds to normal activities and thoughts. The subconscious mind becomes 're-set' at a higher level of anxiety when the anxiety level rises in response to regular anxiety provoking situations or thoughts.
Test anxiety is one of these inappropriate responses because the sufferer knows that they shouldn't feel anxiety under test conditions, but can't stop the feelings from escalating, sometimes out of control. Consciously, there is nothing that they can do to reduce these anxious feelings and test anxiety ensues.
Test anxiety doesn't have to be present. It can be tackled in the same way as any other anxiety-related condition. Whether you experience test anxiety, social phobia or acute panic disorder is irrelevant, you still have an anxiety disorder AND you can do something about it!
